These benches are made of solid teak wood with woven fiber seats in geometric patterns. The tapered legs and understated craftsmanship reflect the influence of George Nakashima, whose work became popular in Ahmedabad after his visit to the National Institute of Design (NID) in November 1964. During his 2-3 week stay, Nakashima developed new designs, adapted earlier ones, and left behind detailed drawings for 32 different furniture pieces, inspiring local artisans and institutions. The benches carry HUDCO markings and were originally used in HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd) buildings, a premier public sector enterprise for housing and infrastructure development in India.
